An Auckland man has been charged with raping a woman in a hospital after she gave birth by police investigating a cold case murder.

The 54-year-old appeared at the Auckland District Court today where Judge David Harvey agreed with the Crown and defence lawyers that revealing his name could impact on his right to a fair trial.

The man was charged by police investigating the cold case murder of Katrina Jefferies, whose body was found dumped in a reserve in Hillsborough nine years ago.

His arrest on 36 charges is not associated with the murder.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which also include one of kidnapping a woman.

He is accused of beating his victims around the head, using weapons including a bottle and a chain.

He will be back in court for an application for bail next month.
