Caller helps stop dangerous driver

The arrest of a disqualified driver, whom a caller reported as driving drunk through the Lewis Pass, has been cited as a prime example of police and the community working together.

The man was apprehended last night in Reefton after a member of the public dialled *555.

Police said the caller told the traffic hotline that the car was being driven at speed and over-taking in oncoming traffic.

The detailed description enabled police to stop the driver a short while later and impound the car.

Constable Fred Aplin, of Reefton, said if it was not for the caller's quick thinking, it would only have been a matter of time before someone was killed or seriously injured.

A man has been charged with careless driving, driving while disqualified and driving with excess breath alcohol.
