Man charged with 30 years of offences

A man has been charged with offences spanning more than 30 years by police hunting the killer of an Auckland woman.

However, officers said the charges are not related to the death of Katrina Jefferies, whose semi-naked body was found dumped in a reserve in Hillsborough in 2005.

The police have just revealed the 54-year-old man was arrested on Friday and has appeared in the Auckland District Court.

He is facing several charges, including unlawful sexual connection, sexual violation, kidnapping, aggravated wounding, threatening to kill and assault with a weapon.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said the total of 36 charges relate to three victims for offending police say happened between 1983 and February this year.

"The operation has been running since July and in that time we've spoken to several people, some of whom made disclosures and complaints to us that required further follow-up and which resulted in these charges being laid against the accused," Mr Beard said.

"The investigation into the 2005 murder of Katrina Jefferies, mother of a two-year-old at the time of her death, continues and we'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has information that might assist us."

The man arrested on the unrelated charges on Friday will next appear in court on Thursday.
