A hunter is being treated in Rotorua Hospital after suffering a head injury and becoming lost in bush between Opotiki and Gisborne.

Police said the 50-year old Mount Maunganui man went hunting with two friends on Saturday.

The group agreed to split up and meet at a hut that evening but when the man, who is diabetic, still had not turned up on Sunday morning, his friends feared for his safety and alerted the police.

Search and rescue teams spent yesterday looking for him and he was found by a farmer just before midnight yesterday, sheltering in a shed.

Sergeant Greg Lexmond said the man had fallen on Saturday, and was knocked unconscious and woke up later disoriented.
