The riverside access to Christchurch Hospital will be closed on Wednesday as work on the new Acute Services Building begins.

The health board's chief executive David Meates said the back entrance of the hospital will be used by contractors and machinery and there will be 150 fewer carpark spaces around the hospital.

He said the next few years will be challenging.

Over $650 million will be spent developing new facilities at both Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals.
