Authority apologises to bus passengers

9:26 pm on 9 October 2014

The Transport Authority has apologised to bus passengers who were trapped by slips near Kaikoura in April.

Oliver Sutherland, one of 27 people put on the bus in Christchurch after their flight to Nelson was cancelled, said they were left on the slipping hillside in a leaking bus with no toilets and no communications.

Dr Sutherland said two senior Transport Authority officials travelled to Nelson to meet with a group of passengers today and apologised for not closing the road earlier.

He said the group was also meeting with the police next month, but he still believed a Government inquiry was needed.

Dr Sutherland said in his view the whole civil defence network failed that night and an overall inquiry into what happened would be beneficial.

He said the group was meeting with the police next month.
