The Southland Regional Council says it will assess a gun club site where it is believed cattle died of lead poisoning.
The Ministry for Primary Industries says the dairy cattle ingested high levels of lead while grazing on fodder beet grown at property owned by the Nightcaps Clay Target Club at Wreys Bush.
A council spokesperson said staff would visit the site this week to assess the situation and offer advice on the future use of the land.
It said it has not done any site testing to date, but some samples may be taken that would help to determine how the site should be managed.
