Mother charged over 'distressing' driving

A Hamilton woman faces charges after what police called appalling and distressing driving.

Police said the 25-year-old was seen doing a U-turn in front of oncoming traffic on a State Highway with her three-year-old child standing in the front seat.

A pregnant woman who was intoxicated and smoking cigarettes was in the back seat of the car, police said.

The driver was on a learner licence and returned a breath alcohol test result of 679 milligrams, they said.

She is facing charges of child neglect and drink-driving, and is likely to appear in the Hamilton District Court later this week.
