The number of used cars coming into the country is the highest for nine years, according to the Motor Trade Association.

Last month, 12,052 used vehicles were brought into he country, up 12 percent on June and 25 percent higher than July last year.

Association chief executive Rob MacGregor describes it as a staggering increase, fuelled by a surge in demand for passenger vehicles this year.

He says the number of imports isn't far off the overall record, set in March 2004, when the Japanese used import market was at its peak and the sector sold 14,877 cars.
