Guilty verdict in homeless man murder

6:30 pm on 31 July 2014

A teenager collapsed and had to be held up by security guards at the High Court in Auckland after being found guilty of murdering a homeless man.

Jurors deciding the case of Steven Ray Churchis retired about 11am on Wednesday and returned their verdict at the High Court in Auckland on Thursday afternoon.

The 18-year-old collapsed when the verdict was returned and then attempted to shrug off a security guard.

The court was told how Churchis and his friends planned to sleep in the Mills Lane alleway, off Queen Street in the central city, when they came across 42 year-old Edwin Linder who was disabled and living on the streets.

Churchis roundhouse kicked Mr Linder in the head, before punching him repeatedly.

Mr Linder was found the following day by people on their way to work and died days later in an Auckland hospital.
