Workplace Health and Safety inspectors are investigating after a man was crushed between two trucks and left critically injured at Auckland Airport.

Fire-fighters were called to the Sky Chefs building in Laurence Stevens Drive on Tuesday morning to free him.

Ambulance staff administered CPR and worked for some time to stabilise the man before he was rushed to Middlemore Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Police said the man is believed to have been trapped for some time before being discovered, and their serious crash unit is also investigating.
