A 16-year-old unlicensed driver is dead and two other people are injured after a head-on collision near Pahiatua, in Wairarapa, on Wednesday night.
Sergeant Glenn Ryan, of the Pahiatua police, said a Ford vehicle driven by the teenager crossed the centre line on State Highway 2 about 5km south of Pahiatua township and collided head-on with a Mazda.
The teenager died at the scene and his passenger was in a moderate condition, while the female driver of the Mazda was in a serious condition, Mr Ryan said.
Both the injured were taken to Palmerston North Hospital.
