Boy returns from Waikato with measles

Health authorities in Gisborne are hoping to prevent a wider outbreak of measles after a primary schoolboy returned from Waikato with the disease.

Medical Officer of Health Bruce Duncan said on Monday the boy was not immunised and must have come into contact with someone with measles while away.

Dr Duncan said the boy's father took him to his GP and measles was quickly diagnosed with appropriate action taken.

He says anyone who has been in contact with the boy who is not immune has been isolated and it is hoped a wider outbreak in the district will be prevented as a result.

Dr Duncan said the case is a reminder to immunise children against measles, which is a serious disease and also very infectious.
