The Crown says a teenager accused of murder kicked and punched a homeless, disabled man in an alleyway off Auckland's Queen Street and left him unconscious.

Steven Ray Churchis has denied murdering Edwin Linder and is on trial at the High Court in Auckland. He was 17 when charged.

Crown prosecutor John Dixon told the court on Monday that Mr Linder, 42, died days after the attack in Auckland Hospital from pneumonia in August last year, which Mr Dixon said was a direct result of the beating he got from Mr Churchis.

Mr Dixon said Mr Churchis had been living rough with his friends when they came across Mr Linder.

He said Mr Churchis later told police that he kicked Mr Linder's head before punching him three or four times.

Mr Dixon said Mr Churchis only stopped when one of his friends stopped him.

Justice Venning told the jury of seven women and five men that they will hear two weeks of evidence.
