The first sod has been turned on Vodafone's new Christchurch complex, with the development expected to be completed in 18 months.

Vodafone announced in June it would build its new, $50 million South Island headquarters in the city's innovation precinct.

Its technology director Sandra Pickering said the world-leading innovation centre would allow entrepreneurs to work with Vodafone in developing new products and services.

Ms Pickering said the company would also be able to bring together its 350 staff working in different offices around Christchurch.

"And provide what we believe will be a world leading innovation centre, not only for our staff, but we will have an area called the Vodafone zone which will allow entrepreneurs to work with Vodafone in developing new products and services on our network."
