A young truck driver has been killed following a collision with a train at Ashburton in mid Canterbury.

Eyewitnesses told police the crash at 8.15 am occurred after a truck crossed a rail line as the oncoming train was sounding its warning horn.

Senior sergeant Scott Banfield said the driver George Robert Ellis, 22, died of his injuries.

The crash shunted the badly damaged truck some 500 metres down the rail line.

The freight train, which was travelling south, was also been badly damaged.
