Police are investigating an assault on three Dunedin women by a group of teenage girls at the weekend.

The attack happened on Saturday night outside the women's flat in Cargill Street in central Dunedin about 10.30pm

Police said the women, aged 18 and 19, challenged the girls, who were kicking over wheelie bins in their street.

One of the woman has a broken ankle and extensive bruising, while another has concussion.

Police said they are working to interview six or seven girls aged 15 to 16, who are also believed to have caused problems at a party earlier that evening.
