Several people were taken to hospital overnight and at least three stolen cars retrieved after incidents across the North Island.

Police say there were two pursuits, one at Flaxmere, in Hawke's Bay, where the driver of the stolen vehicle tried to take a bend and lost control.

The driver was taken to hospital with leg injuries and a passenger is also in hospital with head injuries.

And a man was arrested after a pursuit from Mana to Foxton in a stolen vehicle, late on Friday evening, which was abandoned twice.

Acting Inspector Bruce McKay said police used road spikes to disable the vehicle near Foxton.

Mr McKay said the man left the vehicle and was tracked across farmland by police dogs and later found on State Highway 1.

In another incident, in Napier, a car containing four young people hit a power pole.

One person had to be cut free and was taken along with another occupant to hospital, one of them with critical injuries.
