Mr Ryall said Taranaki is faced with a growing but ageing population and a demand for more knee, hip and other elective surgery.

He was speaking at the official opening of the building in New Plymouth on Friday.

The new facility features six new operating theatres, 60 medical beds, 60 surgical beds and 30 assessment, treatment and rehabilitation beds.

Mr Ryall said the hi-tech development is part of the $1 billion investment in capital developments for district health boards around the country.
