Taranaki hit by crime wave

7:48 am on 26 June 2014

Taranaki police are appealing for public help following a spate of burglaries they believe could be linked.

Almost 60 homes and 90 businesses across the region have been burgled during the past month.

Sergeant Bruce Irvine said some of the burglaries are likely to be the work of the same people and the public could hold the key to finding those responsible.

He said anyone who has witnessed something suspicious might hold a vital piece of information which could identify the offender or offenders.

Sergeant Irvine said the thieves have been taking easily-carried items such as jewellery, TVs, iPods and laptop computers.

He said people in the region should take steps to ensure their properites and vehicles are secure and keep an eye on their neighbours' homes.

Burglary is up four percent in Taranaki so far this year and last week alone 19 homes were broken into.
