Wine exports to hit new highs

Wine exports are expected to reach a new record this year after a bumper grape harvest which produced significantly more grapes compared to last year.

The new harvest has produced nearly 450,000 tonnes of grapes - 29 per cent more than last year.

The crop was also high quality due to good weather during the harvest.

New Zealand Winegrowers Chief Executive Officer Philip Gregan told Radio New Zealand's Sunday Morning programme, more than three quarters of the wine will be shipped overseas.

He says exports have grown by more than $300 million since 2010, to reach $1.3 billion.

The aim is for wine exports to top $2 billion within six years.
