6:07 pm on 9 June 2014

Police suspect a man whose body was found in Wellington Harbour may have been on a sailing on the Interislander Cook Strait Ferry on Sunday night.

The unidentified body was removed from the sea near Pencarrow at the entrance to the harbour by police launch the Lady Liz shortly after midday on Monday.

Inspector Mike Coleman said the body is not thought to have been in the water very long.

Police are exploring the possibility that the man had been travelling on the 8pm sailing from Wellington to Picton.

Mr Coleman said the man was wearing casual clothing and inquiries are now under way to try to identify him.
