Warm weather delays Mt Hutt opening

Warmer than usual weather has delayed the opening of a big South Island ski field.

The scheduled opening of the Mt Hutt ski field in Canterbury on Saturday has been postponed due to a lack of snow.

However, Queenstown's Coronet Peak is due to open Saturday and has reasonable snow cover on the main trails.

NZ Ski's sales and marketing manager, Craig Douglas, said New Zealand could see a boost in skiers from across the Tasman once all fields are open.

He said there is very little snow on Australian slopes, and it is often cheaper and easier for Australians to ski in New Zealand.
