Slightly warmer winter - for some

Slightly warmer temperatures are predicted for some parts of New Zealand this winter.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research has released its seasonal climate outlook for June to August.

In the North Island, NIWA says temperatures are likely to be above average. Forecaster Chris Brandolino says that means temperatures will be at least half a degree warmer.

The outlook for the South Island is for average or above average temperatures. NIWA says cold snaps and frosts are expected as winter progresses, and rainfall levels would be normal or above normal.
