A teenager has died in a motocross crash in North Canterbury.
Trent Haywood, who was 14, of Tauranga was riding in the Godfrey Memorial Motocross event in Waipara.
Police said initial enquiries indicated he appeared to lose control of his motorcycle, and crashed down a steep incline at 11am on Sunday.
He was treated by ambulance staff but died at the scene from severe head injuries.
Police said the boy's father and friends were at the event which was cancelled immediately after the crash.
Motorcycling New Zealand president Jim Tuckerman said there would be a full inquiry into the incident.
