One ward at Dunedin Hospital is still in lockdown after an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea this week. The ward is being used to isolate infected patients.
The health board's director of patient services, Richard Bunton, said on Friday the hospital is still extremely busy, but services are returning to normal.
Staff are working through the backlog of elective operations postponed because of the outbreak.
Mr Bunton said the public can help relieve pressure on the hospital by going to their GP early, using the after-hours service and keeping the emergency department for emergencies only.
