Milford Track tramper’s body found

7:24 am on 22 May 2014

The body of a missing tramper has been found in the Clinton River on the West Coast.

Police said the body of the woman was found about 2km south from where she was last seen on the Milford Track on Monday.

Yessica Asmin, 22, from Sydney, was tramping with her partner and was swept away while trying to cross the swollen Pompolona Stream.

Bad weather hampered the search, but a team using a helicopter found the woman late on Wednesday afternoon. Her family have arrived in New Zealand.

An experienced Milford Track guide says too many tourists walk the track unaware of the dangers of high rivers.

Ray Willett told Nine to Noon that more needs to be done to inform tourists how dangerous waterways can be.

Mr Willett said heavy rain can transform dry riverbeds into impassable torrents in a matter of hours. He said he had stayed in huts for up to eight days to avoid crossing swift and unsafe rivers.
