An elderly protester has been charged with common assault after mud was thrown at ACT MP John Banks as he was making his way to court.

Castislav Bracanov, who is known as Sam, appeared in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday.
The incident delayed the start of Mr Banks' trial at the Auckland High Court on Monday by 90 minutes to allow the MP for Epsom to clean himself up.
Mr Banks is on trial on a charge of filing a false electoral return during his 2010 Auckland mayoralty campaign.
Mr Bracanov, 78, is due to reappear on 3 June.
