Concern over amalgamation of help lines

The Salvation Army is concerned the amalgamation of phone helplines could affect frontline services.

The Ministry of Health plans to bring six specialist helplines together into a single national 'Telehealth' line.

The intention is to provide a common front door to all the services, which cover depression, problem gambling and the National Poisons Crisis line among others

But Salvation Army addiction services director Alistair Herring said that could cause problems.

He told Nine to Noon any changes to helplines should ensure an improvement in care and not just efficiency.
