IPCA finds police driver at fault

A police officer has been found to have put a driver, members of the public and other police at risk during a pursuit in 2013.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) says a stolen car and a patrol car were both on the wrong side of the road, speeding and close together in Tauranga in May 2013.

After about a 1 kilometre the car hit a roundabout, injuring the driver and passenger.

The authority finds the officers had reasonable grounds to try to stop the car but not enough weight was given to the speed and closeness of the chase and that might have lead the police driver to take greater risks with his driving.

The driver in question has had further training.
