A large container ship which lost its steering off the Coromandel coast will remain anchored at sea until it is repaired.

The 35,000 tonne cargo vessel MED reported difficulties shortly after leaving the Port of Tauranga on Monday, destined for Noumea.

Maritime New Zealand said the ship would remain anchored 5km offshore until a new part arrived from overseas to fix the steering.

Spokesman Steve Rendle said the vessel could be there for some days.
