Twenty five Defence staff have arrived to help people in Whataroa and Hari Hari, where severe winds caused widespread devastation from 17 April.

Hari Hari dairy farmer Heather Aldridge says fallen trees have damaged fences, making it hard to contain her 700-strong dairy herd and the repair work is too much to handle on her own.

Ms Aldridge says the Defence Force support will help jump-start the clean-up which she thinks she'll be doing for months to come.
