Fire restrictions lifted in lower Northland

An open fire season is now in place across most of Northland, after the rainy days of Easter.

Restrictions have been in place since October in the far north and since January in Whangarei and Kaipara because of the dry conditions.

A complete fire ban remains in the very far north from Taipa to Cape Reinga, including the Karikari peninsula.

Whangarei's chief rural fire officer, Kevin Ihaka, says people will still be held liable for damages if a fire gets out of control.
