In separate incidents, the women were attacked by a man while they were walking home near Victoria University using a path between the Boyd Wilson Field and The Terrace early in the morning. A person had also been attacked in the same area on 28 March.

Wellington City Council spokesperson Richard MacLean said on Tuesday that better lighting is to be installed on the walkway and a second camera will be added in the next few days. Foliage and bush near the path is being chopped back.

Mr MacLean said he did not know whether the one camera already on the path captured images of the attacks and the council is working with the university and police to improve safety in the area.

Victoria's campus services director Jenny Bentley says the university is concerned about the safety of students and others who walk in the area and people should use alternative routes.

Ms Bentley says the university has contracted a security guard to patrol the area at night.
