Prisoners could be court canteen cooks

1:02 pm on 19 April 2014

Women prisoners could be cooking for the staff at Auckland District Court.

The previous contractor has stopped running the canteen there and the Corrections Department has proposed that prisoners run it instead.

Northern regional commissioner Jeanette Burns said only low and minimum-risk prisoners who are close to their release date, would be allowed to work in the canteen.

Women prisoners already run similar cafes for workers building the new South Auckland prison and at the Auckland Region Women's prison.

Ms Burns said the women are working towards their national certificate in commercial catering and working in the canteen would be part of their rehabilitation.

The proposal is still being considered by the Ministry of Justice.
