Auckland War Memorial Museum has won funding to take its World War I commemorative displays into the community.

The Lottery Grants Board has given $3.8 million towards the project.

The museum will offer displays, digital elements and curatorial expertise in communities throughout the First World War centenary period, which ends in 2019.

It says families will be encouraged to share recollections, records and experiences of war that will then be used in a publicly accessible database, Online Cenotaph.
