A man is in a critical condition in Wellington hospital after he was trapped beneath a bus at 2.50am on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Pirie and Austin Streets in the suburb of Mt Victoria to free the man, 21, who was struck by the bus and then became trapped underneath it.

The Fire Service used inflated airbags to lift the bus off him.

NZ Bus chief operating officer Rachel Drew said it's not clear how the man came to be caught under the bus.

She said there were no passengers on the Nightrider bus.
