'Keep lid' on bar, restaurant numbers

A hospitality specialist says there were too many bars and restaurants in Christchurch before the earthquakes and the city needs to be careful not to make the mistake again.

Hospitality New Zealand Canterbury president Peter Morrison was at the Fine Food business breakfast in Christchurch on Monday.

Mr Morrison says before the earthquakes the city had more bars and restaurants per head of population than anywhere else in Australia and New Zealand and it grew too competitive.

He says the city's hospitality industry has returned to two thirds of where it was before September 2010.

He says ideally Christchurch should have only three quarters of the bars and restaurants it had before the earthquakes.
