Repairs to quake-damaged council assets in the Selwyn District, where the first Canterbury earthquake was centred, are almost complete.

The magnitude 7.1 quake hit in September 2010 and was centred near Darfield.

Selwyn District mayor Kelvin Coe says $8.9 million has been spent, which is about 75 percent of the total expenditure needed for repairs.

He says most of the damage was to community centres and halls, cemeteries, roading, water and waste water systems.

Mr Coe says the total cost of earthquake repairs is estimated at about $12 million.
