Call for review of rest home's care

10:25 pm on 2 April 2014

A coroner has called for a review of care at a Dunedin rest home where a woman died from internal injuries after a fall.

Norma Evelyn Evans was living at Bradford Manor Rest Home last March when she fell. She was later admitted to Dunedin Hospital, admitted again at the end of April, and died there a few days later.

Coroner David Crerar has found the cause of her death was multi organ failure, due to a bowel herniation resulting from the earlier fall.

Mr Crear says the care provided by Bradford Manor did not fall below the expected standard but the circumstances of the death do require a reappraisal of care provided, in the hope patients are given better care in the future.
