Maqbool Hussain was found dead by relatives in his squat in the storage area of a former grocery on Dominion Road in Balmoral on Monday.

The police believe the 49-year-old Pakistani died a violent death sometime between when he was last seen on Saturday, and when he was found on Monday.

They are working on narrowing down that time frame now that a post-mortem and the scene examination have been completed.

Officer-in-charge of the investigation Detective Inspector Chris Cahill said Mr Hussain was not known to cause trouble.

"We have the odd report of anti-social behaviour but, in general, he's not someone that has caused a lot of aggravation in the area," Mr Cahill said.

"He's certainly not someone that the police have (had) regular interaction with."

Mr Hussain's daughter had arrived from overseas to assist with the investigation and prepare for his funeral.
