Former Auckland Crown solicitor Simon Moore, QC, has been sworn in as a High Court Judge.

Extra seating had to be set up outside Auckland's ceremonial courtroom one to accommodate members of the legal community, including judges and a large number of Queens Counsel.

The Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias opened the ceremony on Friday afternoon.

Speakers included the head of the Law Society and Justice Moore's brother, Chris Moore, and Attorney-General Chris Finlayson.

Justice Moore, who's been the Auckland Crown prosecutor for 20 years, has prosecuted some of New Zealand's most high-profile cases including the Taito Phillip Field case and the Kahui case.

Mr Moore also prosecuted 12 men in the Pitcairn Islands for sexual offending, as well as the samurai sword murderer Antonie Dixon.

Dame Sian said Justice Moore will be an outstanding judge who will bring flair, enthusiasm and humour to the job.
