Two people have been rescued after being swept out to sea at Carters Beach at Westport on Saturday afternoon.

The men, aged 59 and 23, were caught by the current after their 2.4m fishing boat rolled while trying to enter the Buller River.

The Westport rescue boat and a helicopter from Greymouth were sent out and the two men were brough ashore by two surfers.

They were taken to hospital for a checkup.
