Benefit fraudster denied parole

A man who defrauded a government department of $3.4 million has been denied parole.

Wayne Patterson was jailed in 2007 for using more than one hundred identities to defraud the Ministry of Social Development.

Patterson also faces new charges for fraud and perverting the course of justice, relating to an offer of employment by the Carterton District Council.

The offer in a letter was sent to the Parole Board last year, but had not been written by the council.

Patterson's next court date is scheduled for later in March.

In the meantime, he has been denied parole, with the Parole Board saying he remains a undue risk to the community.
