NZ escapes worst of banana shortage

New Zealand is escaping the worst of an international banana shortage.

Foodstuffs, which owns New World, Pak'nSave and Four Square stores, says its supplies have been affected by poor weather conditions in the Philippines and a ship carrying the fruit having mechanical problems.

However, a spokesperson says stocks should be back to normal by the end of this week.

Countdown supermarkets say they source bananas from Ecuador and the Philippines, so levels have remained stable.
