Close to $3 million is being spent to provide support for at-risk students enrolled in the Correspondence School.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says young people who have been expelled or are habitual truants are enrolled in correspondence lessons.
She says some of them often remain disengaged from learning, and do not gain any qualification.
Ms Parata says the $2.7 million four-year initiative has been designed by the Correspondence School, or Te Kura, and involves work placement or job shadowing opportunities.
She says it will initially focus on up to 80 year 9 to 11 at-risk students already on Te Kura's roll who do not currently have face-to-face support.
