School drops Christian study class

A Palmerston North school has dropped a plan to teach Christian education classes in school time after a parent formally complained to the Board of Trustees.

Belinda Lewer, whose children go to Milson School in Palmerston North, says she's thrilled with the schools decision.

She had planned to file a complaint with the Human RIghts Commission, on the basis that the classes would discriminate against non-Christians.

Ms Lewer says she hopes her experience will make it easier for other parents to approach their schools about the issue.

The Milson School board has decided it will have one optional class, before school on Fridays.
