Pedestrian behaviour concerning drivers

The Wellington City Council says bus drivers have been concerned about pedestrian behaviour for a while. A woman was hit by a bus while crossing the road on Monday afternoon.

The woman, who was hit by a Go Wellington bus in Manners Street, is still in hospital in a stable condition.

The council's manager of city networks, Stavros Michael, says he understands she was hit while crossing the road about 20 metres from a controlled pedestrian crossing.

Mr Michael says it's a very upsetting incident, but safe and signposted crossings are placed at regular intervals in the city.

He says through the summer there have been many reports from bus drivers expressing concern about pedestrians being less than responsible.

Mr Michael says a meeting between agencies next week to look at pedestrian and road safety had already been organised, but is now particularly timely. Representatives from the bus company, police, the Transport Agency and ACC would attend.

The council is also planning a road safety educational campaign in March or April.
