Police say there will be no further investigation into the death of a two-year-old girl now that her mother's ex-partner has been acquitted of her murder and ill-treatment.

Leilani Lotonu'u died after an organ in her abdomen was almost split in two in June 2012.

At the High Court at Auckland on Friday, a jury found her mother's former partner, Michael Martin, not guilty of killing or ill-treating the child.

The police officer in charge of the inquiry, David Pizzini, says police put forward the best evidence they could at the trial and they're not looking at anyone else in relation to the death.
