A person has died in one of the first of two serious crashes in the Far North.
Another person has been airlifted to hospital in a very serious condition after a crash involving a car and a motorcycle on Inland Road near Lake Ohia, north of Kaitaia, at 4.45pm on Tuesday.
Police say two other people who have moderate injuries are being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Emergency staff are at the scene and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.
The second crash, just south of Whangarei on State Highway 1 near Mata about 5pm, involved three cars.
A St John's ambulance spokesperson says one person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
